It was my Granny’s funeral today. Like always at funerals, I cried. Things were made much easier by the fact that the minister, Gary, is one of the Northern Monkeys, making it all much more personal than some of the ‘fill in the blanks’ services I’ve been to.
The thing that really made me blub was the blessing Gary used at the end:
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
Isn’t that from the episode of the Simpsons where Bart responds to Mrs Krabapple’s Lonely Hearts ad? Isn’t the next line “Wherever I go the wind will whisper “Edna”… PS I am Gay”
I’ll get me coati.
Hmmm, that’s a fairly comprehensive knowledge of the Simpsons you have there… (I had to Google to find the full quote – I bet you knew it off by heart.)
“Dearest Edna, I must leave you. Why I cannot say. Where I am going you cannot know. How I will get there I haven’t decided yet. But one thing I can tell you, any time I hear the wind blow it will whisper the name… Edna. And so let us part with a love that
will echo through the ages. — Woodrow.”
