Who said the spirit of Christmas is dead? Just look the wonderful tree our district has put on for us:

It’s been like that for weeks now. OK, I appreciate there might not be enough money in the budget to replace it, but surely a tree that looks like it has been given a good kicking is worse?

Round Robins

I’ve just finished reading Simon Hoggart‘s books about Christmas round robin letters, The Cat that could Open the Fridge and The Hamster that Loved Puccini.

In them, he laughs at the letters sent round at Christmas time by perfect families with perfect children who love music and schools and exams, and who all go on perfect holidays together.

It reminded me a bit of the School Run section on Classic FM, where records are dedicated to Storm, 5, who loves playing his bassoon and whose favourite composer is Mozart, and who started secondary school last year; is this just another form of showing off?

Simon Hoggart’s books are funny, and laugh at people who rightly deserve to be laughed at, but part of me couldn’t help feeling uncomfortable.

I receive a handful of round robin letters a year, and I can’t think of one instance where I’m not glad to received them. They’re from people who I care about, but who don’t figure enough in my life for me to catch up with them on a regular basis. That doesn’t mean that I’m not interested in what they’re up to, and their letters give me an insight into what’s happened over the last year.

So I don’t know what to think about round robin letters, and whether they’re a good thing or a bad thing. Good thing, I think.

But the first person to tell me about Storm’s bassoon career may get hurt.

Everyone knows that knitting is the new rock and roll (or whatever), thanks to people like Stitch’n'Bitch. But this means that some people are knitting things that they really shouldn’t.

Spare Time

I love the fact that the web is a playground for people with far too much creative time on their hands. One of my mates sent me this today and as I am a child of the ASCII art generation I just love it.

This is worksafe but you may want turn the sound down just a little bit!

Things you want that you know you don’t need

I know I don’t need it but I so WANT one of these. I assume the novelty would wear off in about two seconds, and it would get annoying because it will probably only do the silly little hot dogs from a tin. But wouldn’t it be cool to be able to heat a hotdog AND toast the buns at the same time?

I think I may have an issue with hotdogs as I also wanted an Octodog when I became aware of them.

Found a link in the Guardian this weekend to an absolutely fantastic blog, www.dailydancer.com. The guy is an absolute star who just loves to dance and shares his passion for this regularly, hence the name.
